Description

The proposed partnership in undergraduate education for the msfc stem workforce is a collaborative effort between NASA's marshall space flight center (msfc) and three huntsville tertiary institutions - alabama a & m university (aamu), oakwood university (OU) and the university of alabama in huntsville (UAH). Aamu and OU are hbcu's with well-established stem programs. This collaboration seeks to place 8 undergraduate students annually into summer research internships with prominent NASA scientists. These internships will last for 10 weeks between june and august of each year. Successful interns will then be assigned to academic mentors as on-campus resources during the school year. Both the program manager and academic mentors will present several professional networking opportunities during the school year. These activities are aimed at facilitating and encouraging these participants to pursue further training and consequent full-time employment in the science and engineering workforce. Special attempts will be made to encourage mise participants to not only consider advanced careers in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering but also explore career opportunities in msfc and its affiliated facilities and organizations in the geographical area. The proposed program will provide much-needed hands-on experience and a strong academic support network to retain stem majors in the discipline as well help them reach graduation with skills necessary to make them competitive in the market place. With an extensive local professional network, IT is anticipated that interns will also elect to develop a stem career in the same geographical area.
