Description
The atlanta metropolitan college (AMC) curriculum improvement partnership award for the integration of research into the undergraduate curriculum (cipair) project entitled "creating research excellence in science, technology, mathematics & engineering (NASA crest-me): innovations for pipeline success" seeks to increase the number of underrepresented, underserved and minority students successfully pursing and completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (stem) and NASA-related courses and programs of study. Through programmatic activities addressing specific objectives, the NASA crest me project will achieve four major goals. These goals are: goal 1: to strengthen the science curriculum by enhancing and modifying existing undergraduate stem courses to include NASA-related content and primary research. Goal 2: to provide undergraduate students with opportunities to actively participate in NASA-related stem research projects. Goal 3: to recruit and cultivate a more competitive applicant pool of underrepresented, underserved and minority undergraduate students in the stem disciplines who ultimately consider careers in NASA-related fields. Goal 4: to provide undergraduate students with mentoring opportunities intended to increase interest in stem disciplines and NASA-related careers. Accordingly, specific methodologies are designed for the objectives related to each of these four goals. These methodologies include (1) enhancement of curriculum (e.g., course, program and instructional) (2) training stem faculty, (3) recruitment and retention of stem students, (4) facilitation of student entry into both baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate stem programs, (5) training and mentoring pre-collegiate and undergraduate students, and (6) development of a more diverse and competitive applicant pool for stem and NASA-related fields.
