Description
LAGUARDIA community college (CUNY) and MEDGAR ever college (CUNY) seeks to integrate NASA-related materials into first-year stem courses in physics, computer science, engineering and environmental science. This project will increase the exposure of minority students to stem research including opportunities to do research at NASA goddard institute for space studies (GISS) and at the NASA center for optical sensing and imaging (COSI) at city college(CUNY). This project will also strengthen the stem research infrastructure at LAGUARDIA and MEDGAR evers. At LAGUARDIA seven courses will be revised to include research topics pertaining to the remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols and gases: general physics I, general physics II, computer electronics II, electrical circuits I, engineering lab 2, computer technology computer lab and CTC++ programming. At MEDGAR evers the environmental science course will be revised. Students will tour NASA facilities and present their research at scholarly conferences. The entire project will be accomplished in collaboration with the NASA centers GISS and COSI and will involve three NASA missions, glory, hubble and aura. There are three existing research programs: (a) the sunphotometer, lidar, polarimetry research of earth aerosols (MEDGAR and LAGUARDIA) and (B) the hubble space telescope study of aerosols on jupiter (LAGUARDIA), and the balloon ozone mapping project (MEDGAR). Annually, both schools will have 250 students enrolled in the revised courses and 20 students will be selected as undergraduate research assistants.
