Description

United tribes technical college (uttc) is a minority serving institution with students from more than 75 federally recognized native american tribes in the nation. Native americans have long been underrepresented in secondary institutions and the workplace, especially in stem fields, and improvement of curricula and implementation of research opportunities are critical in reversing these trends. This project, bootcamps (bringing opportunities onboard to create academic and methodological preparation in stem), proposes to develop and strengthen curriculum in the tribal environmental science (TES) program to increase and retain the number of underrepresented students in stem fields. By integrating NASA research experiences into the curriculum students will build confidence and gain a better understanding of science. The main objectives of the project are to develop new courses in research and remote sensing while enhancing three existing courses. We also aim to implement an 8-week student internship with uttc and NASA facilities as well as offer annual workshops to faculty and students. The development and implementation of new courses into the current TES curriculum will make uttc graduates more competitive for employment or academia. By offering research opportunities with the NASA ames research center we will attract more students to the program as well as increase retention rates of existing students. Through this project faculty will build relationships with NASA researchers that not only enhance their knowledge of NASA##s goals and mission, but also encourage student participation and excitement in stem fields.
