Description
Within the next year. Rocky will break ground on the long-overdue renovation and expansion of the bair family center for the sciences, originally constructed in 1981 to house the college's chemistry, biology, physics, geology and mathematics programs. This heavily used facility currently contains only four classrooms, ten laboratories, and eleven faculty offices. Originally, the science center served seven faculty members and a student body of 439. Today that student count has nearly doubled, with 280 students, approximately one-third of our student population, declaring majors in math and science. Our science faculty has also grown exponentially; currently 19 scientists occupy offices in five different buildings across rocky's campus. Increasing numbers of science students using outdated equipment in limited lab spaces has led to chronic overcrowding and raised concerns about safety issues. Additionally, renovations in competing schools' science facilities have threatened to place rocky at a disadvantage in the high-stakes race for student recruitment and retention. As the breadth and scope of rocky's science curriculum continues to grow, we are well-positioned to bring some of the region's best students on board. With rocky's renewed focus on excellence in science education, including undergraduate research and environmental policy, we are committed to delivering a science facility consistent with our own high standards. Therefore, we are undertaking a $7 million expansion and renovation of the bair science center, designed to help US usher in the next generation of our nation's scientists and leaders. With this commitment comes sacrifice, including an immediate inability to meet over $1 million in science equipment requests proffered by faculty. Therefore, we are prioritizing science equipment needs in our overall fundraising strategy, which leads US to this proposal, and our appeal for $125.000 to acquire and/or update crucial supplies and equipment.
