Description

Indigenous education institute INC. The navajo sky: education modules for digital planetariums under previous funding from the NASA ideas program, the indigenous education institute and the university of notre dame began experimenting with using state-of-the-art digital planetarium technologies as a way of displaying the navajo sky. Authentic navajo sky figures, based on decades of research by LEI, were digitized and placed on the planetarium sky. They were originally intended for use in live presentations by navajo experts; however, they can also be used as the basis for illustrating traditional navajo sky stories. A prototype of such a story, told in the navajo language with translations into english, has been made, along with a companion planetarium presentation on western and NASA astronomy. Preview presentations at the international planetarium society conference (july 2008 in chicago) and the world indigenous peoples conference on education (december 2008 in australia) brought overwhelmingly positive responses. Indigenous people-whether navajo or not--gained a new appreciation of both their own sky knowledge and of western astronomy. Westerners gained a new appreciation of the depth of navajo sky knowledge and its connections to life on earth, while western planetarians expressed great interest in bringing such authentic representations of indigenous skies to their audiences. Encouraged by these responses, we now propose to develop a more complete navajo sky and use IT as a basis for developing a set of educational digital planetarium modules that feature authentic navajo sky stories, complimentary western astronomy vignettes, compelling features from NASA space science missions, and accompanying classroom activities. Our goals are to engage navajo (and other native) youths in their own sky traditions, build an appreciation of indigenous sky knowledge in non-native youths, and introduce both audiences to compelling ideas in western astronomy and NASA space science.
