Description
The consortium consisting of the city university of new york (CUNY) and goddard space flight center (GSFC) science and exploration directorate proposes to provide college/university faculty professional development, curriculum enhancement and academic program development, and undergraduate student research in order to support two of NASA's heliophysics science objectives: a) understand the physical processes of the space environment from the sun to earth; and B) understand how human society technological systems and the habitability of earth are affected by solar variability. The CUNY colleges are medgar evers college (MEC), queens borough community college (QCC), the college of staten island (CSI), the city college of new york (CCNY) laguardia community college (LCC), york college (YC), and the CUNY graduate center (GE). Research areas include: solar disturbances and coronal mass ejections; solar variability and its effect on climate; solar observations with 16; telescope at the astrophysical observatory college of staten island; the solar wind and its effect on the earth's magnetosphere and atmosphere; and interaction of solar wind ions and jupiter's atmosphere. The consortium will also provide high school teacher professional development so that they can develop heliophysics enrichment activities and research for their students. This consortium is a subset of the former NASA mucerpi funded NYC space science research alliance and will use that existing structure for management, expansion and dissemination. The project's activities are consistent with the NASA heliophysics program which aims to explore the sun-earth system to understand the sun and its effects on earth, the solar system, and the space environmental conditions that will be experienced by explorers, and to demonstrate technologies that can improve future operational systems. The curriculum development will offer undergraduate a CUNY BS space science program a strong sun-earth connection option and heliophysics minors at many participating CUNY colleges. The advanced workshops for faculty and undergraduate student will enhance faculty ability to mentor students in heliophysics research using NASA data, thereby adding to the body of scientific knowledge, as well as preparing students for graduate study and the NASA workforce. The teacher training is anchored on a sun-earth interaction workshop that will facilitate providing high school students with enrichment activities (classes, science clubs, student research). The development of the web-based workshops is for sustainability.
