Description

Rochester museum and science center (rmsc), with rochester institute and technology's chester f. Carlson center for imaging science (RIT), seeks to develop family focused activities centered on six important calendar days in science, engineering, technology. And mathematics. The overarching aim of the project is to directly engage preteens and their families in science learning and, with them, to produce a set of family engaging events and exhibits that connect real world events to NASA. The newsworthy days allow US to cover a range of disciplines, and seek to connect a wide range of interests to NASA science and engineering. Twelve families will be recruited from each of six schools (two schools in rochester city school district, two schools in the rush henrietta school district, one school in the west irondequoit school district. And one charter school in the city of rochester). These families will work directly with rmsc staff. And faculty and students from RJT, to develop a kickoff event, an audionisual exhibit, accompanying promotional and educational materials, and a web presence. The kick off events will be held on the saturday preceding each anniversary date, there will be a kickoff event for the exhibit, with hands on "WOW!" activities explicitly designed for family participation from the wider school audience and media attention. The AIV exhibit prepared for the anniversary days will remain in the museum for six weeks until the kickoff for the next anniversary day. The institute for learning innovation is leading the professional evaluation plan and an external advisory board is designed to assure the success of the project, to maximize involvement from the community, and to maximize potential for outputs of project to be used by other science centers across the country.
