Description

FY09 earmark entitled, `for aerospace research on joining tubular support structures at low cost and high reliability this project builds on the success of previous work completed by the michigan research institute in conjunction with its collaborators spaceform INC. And delphi INC. In previous work (also sponsored in part by NASA funding) michigan research institute has demonstrated the value and viability of the proprietary technology of deformation resistance welding in joining round sections. This technology was developed in order to support the concepts of manufacturing truss type structures in space. The ability to create such structures with high integrity joints makes the concepts of space based manufacturing a reality. This second phase builds on the work done thus far and extends the capability of the technology to non-circular tubes, linear interface welding, tube to node structures, dissimilar thickness welds and the final step of the production of space frames using the technology. Andrew taylor and james richter have worked closely with this technology from its early days and are uniquely qualified to build on their success taking the technology to the next level. In addition the project will enlist the assistance of delphi INC and spaceform INC as subcontractors, both of which have extensive backgrounds in this technology to ensure the project will be a success. The project is broken into six defined tasks with deliverables. Each of these tasks builds on the knowledge base gained thus far and extends the capability of the technology to make IT a real asset to NASA as IT continues its mission of pushing forward the frontiers of space exploration.
