Description

Rhodes college expanded NASA STARS with an automated training cirriculum: the expanding NASA STARS project will enable rhodes college to build on its previous NASA STARS program. This project is designed to enhance the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and math (stem) subjects in memphis city schools (MCS). We will send 10 teachers from this urban, inner-city school district to a weekend space camp for teachers in fall 2009. After learning about NASA's 6-week science curriculum, they will work with 5 rhodes students to implement IT in their classes. This part of the project will reach 1,000-1,200 students in grades 5-8 of our three partner schools. These schools-cypress middle school, springdale elementary school and snowden school (k-8}-are all MCS schools that qualify for title 1. Groups of students from each school-a total of 27D-will be selected for the 3-day space camp experience, with all tuition and transportation expenses covered. Rhodes students and staff will provide expertise and support for implementation and evaluation of the NASA STARS program. We will use surveys and opportunities for reflection to assess the educational impact of the space camp experience. Our goals are to: (1) enhance MCS science teachers' ability to engage students through an exciting curriculum; (2) stimulate the interest and curiosity of students in grades 5-8 in ways that will motivate them to work in stem classes; (3) increase the number of students interested in pursuing stem-related careers; and (4) enrich the undergraduate experience of rhodes students through community-based learning in an urban, inner-city school environment.
