Description
National federation of the blind to develop and apply assistive technology approaches and techniques that enhance participation of blind youth in stem education the 2009 NFB youth slam will be a five-day interactive academy designed to inspire blind high school students to pursue coursework and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (stem). While focusing on scientific education and interactive experiences, this academy will also give blind youth an opportunity to learn from blind role models including scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and inventors. This stem event will leverage the vision of NASA with the mentoring infrastructure of the NFB to create a powerful demonstration of the possibilities for the blind in stem fields. The NFB, in partnership with the university of maryland and others, will bring 170 blind high school students and nearly 100 blind mentors and instructors to college park from july 26 through august 1,2009, to experience stem subjects, areas typically thought to be dependent upon sight. This program will be a vehicle to develop, apply, and disseminate assistive technology approaches and nonvisual teaching techniques. Students and mentors will be joined in pods-units of three students and one mentor. Each POD will be assigned to a track for the week. Tracks will be devoted to subjects including astronomy, chemistry, forensic science, and robotics, as well as an environmental science track focusing on alternative energy sources. A more detailed description of each track can be found below. Track assignments will be based upon individual student interest. When not in their track sessions, pods will attend a variety of short sessions designed to expose them to other content areas, as well as sessions focused on issues related to blindness and self-advocacy.
