Description
Galaxy evolution in the UV from the swift UV/optical telescope archive: the evolution of galaxy properties over time remains a major unsolved problem in astronomy. Important information about galaxy evolution is provided at ultraviolet wavelengths of light - where new STARS in galaxies emit a uniquely large fraction of their energy. The amount of light is directly proportional to the rate of unobscured star formation in galaxies. The swift UV/optical telescope (uvot) - one of three CO-aligned telescopes on board the NASA swift observatory satellite - is one of only a small handful of telescopes capable of observing UV light. For the past 3.5 years - the uvot has been gathering UV images of the sky for various projects. The database contains a wealth of untapped information on galaxies that have been observed mainly serendipitously during the swift mission. The problem of galaxy evolution will be addressed with three approaches. First - uvot images of nearby galaxies will be used to study the spatially resolved star formation and dust attenuation in galaxies. Second - extremely deep UV images of extragalactic fields will be examined to determine the global star formation history over the past seven billion years. Finally - a large sample of active galaxies and quasars containing supermassive black holes will be studied at optical / UV / and x-RAY wavelengths. The growth of supermassive black holes is closely connected with the growth and development of galaxies - but IT is not understood how. This study will help tie together the properties of the galaxies with the black holes by using the unique simultaneously observed VV and x-RAY data from swift. This program is directly related to the NASA strategic sub-goals 30.1 and 30.2 - which address how the first galaxies formed / how they changed over time / and phenomena near black holes.
