Description
"formation and early evolution of the solar nebula" we propose to continue theoretical research on the processes that are believed to govern the early dynamical evolution of the solar nebula. In particular, we intend to focus our investigations on the initiation and growth of gravitational instabilities in the solar nebula; the effects of these instabilities on the three-dimensional structure of the nebula; the impact of these instabilities on the production of giant planets as well as the processing of primitive solids; and the influence of the local star-forming environment on gravitational instabilities. The proposed work is an extension of previous research supported by a current PGG grant (NAG5-10262). The tasks detailed below will be pursued primarily with high resolution, three-dimensional hydrodynamics simulations. We adopt a systematic approach, in which well-studied disk models are used to test the addition of new physics at high resolution, followed by appropriately resolved simulations of solar nebula models. During the proposed research period, we will conduct numerical experiments in order (1) to evaluate the effects of various heating and cooling processes on the origin, growth, and evolution of gravitational instabilities in protoplanetary disks in general and the solar nebula in particular; (2) to characterize the impact that gravitational instabilities have on disk material and structure; and (3) to assess the ability of these gravitational instabilities to form giant gaseous protoplanets. My collaborators and i have made substantial progress during the previous two funding cycles, as detailed below, including the discovery of a possible hybrid formation mechanism for gaseous giant planets (pickett ET AL. 2003; pickett and LIM 2004; durisen ET AL. 2005).
