Description

Mass injection and plasma dynamics in saturn's magnetosphere cassini observations of saturn moon enceladus indicate that the satellite is geologically active and a potent source of dust, water vapor, and plasma to the saturn system. Indeed, IT appears that enceladus may be the principal source of plasma for saturn s magnetosphere. We seek to determine the rate at which material becomes ionized near enceladus using cassini observations and an analytical model that relates the mass-loading rate to observable perturbations of the plasma flow. Newly added plasma is accelerated to the observed flow velocity by a current system that connects the satellite-magnetosphere interaction region to remote regions on the same magnetic-flux tube, and ultimately to saturn ionosphere where angular momentum is supplied to the magnetosphere. By applying this model to various cassini data sets, most notably from the plasma spectrometer instrument, we propose to quantify the nature and distribution of the plasma source near enceladus and to provide important constraints on that satellite composition, internal dynamics, and interactions with the magnetosphere. Our model also predicts the magnetic perturbations that accompany this process, which we will compare with cassini magnetometer data. In addition, we will apply a newly developed theoretical model to study mass injection and outward transport occurring throughout broader regions within saturn magnetosphere. For such processes, the same coupling mechanism described above produces a persistent lag of global extent that makes plasma move around saturn more slowly than planet IT rotates. Using observed plasma flow velocities, our model will determine the location and magnitude of these distributed plasma sources. Studying these processes is of particular importance as these interactions continually redistribute energy between saturn and its magnetosphere. Identifying and quantifying sources of energy are critical to understanding any dynamic system.
