Description
Sea ICE has a substantial impact on the earth's energy balance and global atmospheric and oceanic circulation and is very sensitive to perturbations in global climate. The ICE, cloud and land elevation satellite (icesat) mission has provided high quality information on sea ICE FI-eeboard, reflectivity, and roughness since 2003, enabling estimates of ICE volume and mass, two critical parameters for monitoring and predicting future climate changes. This project will investigate the use of icesat data over polynyas, openings in the sea ICE cover that have a climatic influence disproportionate to their area and are a complex mix of sea ICE types and processes. Through comparisons between coregistered icesat, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and thermal infrared satellite data, methods for estimating ICE freeboard and thickness will be evaluated and perhaps improved. Icesat-derived thickness estimates will be used to study the thermodynamics ofthe polynyas, including ICE and deep water production. In addition, the relationships between calibrated SAR backscatter and icesat-derived sea ICE roughness and reflectivity will be examined statistically and with the use of backscatter models, and methods developed to take advantage ofthe combination of both data sources. Throughout the course ofthe project, assistance will be provided to the icesat team at goddard space flight center (gsfc) in testing and improving icesat sea ICE parameter algorithms and the design of an icesat successor laser altimetry mission.
