Description

"laboratory spectroscopy of isotopic methane at low temperatures" methane makes up approximately 5% of the atmosphere of titan, which is predominantly nitrogen. Temperatures in this atmosphere range from 70 to 200 LI. Knowledge of the temperature-dependence of nitrogen-broadened line widths and shifts is needed for interpretation of infrared spectra of titan's atmosphere, such as are obtained by the composite infrared spectrometer (clrs) instrument on the cassini spacecraft. The spectral region from 6 to 10 microns i$u SED not only for measurements of atmospheric composition. HUT also for retrievals of titan atmospheric temperature profiles. While we have measured the temperature dependence of nitrogen-broadened widths, and shifts in the 7.5-micron region the main methane isotupunler (12('114). The corresponding parameters for monodeuterated methane (CN3D) have been measured extensively only ST r~OM~TEM~erat(N29R6EK ). And any a few measurements of individual lines at low temperatures exist for CH3D and csrbon-13 methane (13CH41. We propose to determine nitrogen-HRUADMCL1 widths and nitrogen broadened widths and pressure-induced line shifts along with their terperatue dependences, for chub in the triad region (6-10 microns) and 13CH4 in the 7.5-micron region. Spectra will be recorded with high resolution fourier transform spectrometers and cool able sample cells. Analysis will be done using a multispectrnm fining technique to retrieve the spectroscopic parameters for several hundred transitions in the bands studied. Line mixing parameters will also be determined in this analysis. Departures from the standard lorentz and voigt line shapes at low temperatures, observed for a few methane transitions in laboratory diode laser studies, will be investigated for the isotopic methane-nitrogen systems using the FTS data. The spectroscopic parameters resulting from our proposed laboratory investigation will enable more accurate modeling of infrared radiative transfer in the atmosphere of titan. The parameters will be important for interpreting clrs data and other infrared observations of titan and for designing instrumentation for future missions.
