- The University of Colorado has been awarded a $1.08 million research grant by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to support the Cloud and Aerosol Monsoonal Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2EX). Under this contract, the Atmospheric Radiation Group at the University of Colorado will deploy the Solar Spectral Flux Radiometer (SSFR) aboard a NASA P-3B aircraft to measure spectrally resolved shortwave irradiance. The primary objective is to characterize the atmospheric...
- This $1,102,083.01 cooperative agreement was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Colorado to study variations in 3D cloud structure and its impact on the interpretation of NASA satellite data for top-of-atmosphere radiation studies. The goal is to obtain ground-based data on 3D cloud structure and phase to improve climate model parameterizations of cloud radiative feedback mechanisms, which are a major source of uncertainty. The project will...
- This is a $756,429 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Nevada System of Higher Education's Desert Research Institute (DRI) to conduct research on the impacts of black carbon aerosols on atmospheric temperature and cloud cover. The research aims to better understand the "semi-direct effect" of absorbing aerosols on cloud processes across different global regions. The study will leverage satellite data from instruments like CALIPSO,...
- This is a $365,141 firm-fixed-price contract awarded by NASA to Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI), a woman-owned small business. The contract is for the investigation of aerosol-cloud interactions and the aerosol indirect effect in marine low clouds, using data from NASA's CALIOP and MODIS instruments. The project will also evaluate new methods to combine CALIOP aerosol data with other A-Train satellite datasets. Numerical experiments with the WRF-Chem model will be conducted to...
- The University of Colorado at Boulder was awarded a $538,533 research grant (21-CCST21-0065) on August 18, 2022, to develop new CALIPSO Level-2 data products using a density-dimension algorithm for detecting thin clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. This grant, which extends through August 17, 2026, supports fundamental research in atmospheric science and remote sensing technology. The work will be performed at the university's Boulder, Colorado campus under the Office of Contracts and...
- This is a $387,357.12 grant awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) to develop an algorithm to retrieve the cloudy atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) thermodynamic structure from Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO) soundings. The project will leverage data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) sensors to help constrain the GPS RO retrievals...
- The Shared Services Center awarded a $98,343 research grant to Columbia University's Sponsored Projects Administration Division to explore A-Train satellite observations and their application to improving General Circulation Model (GCM) cumulus parameterizations. The project, titled "Exploring A-Train Observations of Land-Ocean Contrast in Convective Cloud Characteristics and Their Ambient Environment Toward Improving GCM Cumulus Parameterizations," focuses on analyzing the contrasting...
- Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI), a woman-owned small business headquartered in Lanham, Maryland, was awarded a $98,710 research grant (21-CCST21-0065) by the Shared Services Center on August 18, 2022. The grant funds the development of new CALIPSO Level-2 data products through implementation of the Density-Dimension Algorithm for the Atmosphere to enable high-resolution detection of thin clouds and aerosols. Work is to be performed in Lanham, Maryland, with an ultimate completion...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $823,174 research grant to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York (Columbia University) to provide the Research Scanning Polarimeter (RSP) instrument for the Clouds, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes-Philippines Experiment (CAMP2EX) campaign. The RSP will be used to make airborne observations of aerosols, clouds, and atmospheric conditions in the Philippines during the southwest monsoon to enhance...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $315,074 grant to the University of Wisconsin System to study the 3D structure and frequency of occluded extratropical cyclones and their impact on cloud and precipitation patterns. The research aims to use observations from the CloudSat and CALIPSO satellites to analyze how cloud and precipitation distributions evolve during the occlusion process and how they are influenced by large-scale environmental factors. The findings will...
JOHN DEVORE/VISIDYNE INC "SAM (SUN AND AUREOLE MEASUREMENT) CLOUD STUDIES IN SUPPORT OF EOS CAL/VAL, ALGORITHM REFINEMENT, AND SCIENCE STUDIES" A NEW GROUND-BASED SENSOR NAMED SAM, FOR SUN AND AUREOLE MEASUREMENT, IS CURRENTLY IN FIELD TEST. INITIAL RESULTS INDICATE THAT IT CAN PROVIDE PRECISE MEASUREMENTS OF CLOUD OPTICAL DEPTH AND INFORMATION ON PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS REQUIRED FOR IMPROVING MODIS AND OTHER SATELLITE-BASED CLOUD PROPERTY RETRIEVALS. VALIDATION AND REFINEMENT, IF REQUIRED, OF MODIS CLOUD OPTICAL DEPTH AND MICROPHYSICAL PROPERTY RETRIEVALS WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CO-COLLECTS OF DATASETS IN MUCH THE SAME WAY THAT AERONET MEASUREMENTS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY USED TO VALIDATE AEROSOL RETRIEVALS USING AVHRR (NOAA-14) AND VIRS (CERES-SSF4) DATA. CO-COLLECTS WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FIELD OBSERVATION PROGRAMS CURRENTLY PLANNED, E.G., CLASIC, AS WELL AS OTHERS IN PLANNING, TO LEVERAGE OTHER ASSETS MAKING CLOUD MEASUREMENTS. A NUMBER OF CO-COLLECTS WILL BE MADE FOR CLOSE OVERPASSES OF CLOUDSAT FOR COMPARISON WITH CLOUD PROPERTY RETRIEVALS USING THE CLOUD PROFILING RADAR. IN ADDITION, CO-COLLECTS INVOLVING SAM AND AERONET WILL BE EMPLOYED TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF AEROSOLS ON THE FORMATION OF CUMULUS CLOUDS.
