Description

Strain on the saturnian satellites the mid-sized satellites of saturn exhibit a variety of tectonic features, which may hold a key to the history of their dynamical and interior evolution. As a first step in understanding the strain history preserved on their surfaces, we will measure the amount of strain across tectonic features on their surfaces using data from the cassini ISS instrument. We will use techniques that we have developed to measure strain on the surface of jupiter's moon ganymede, and apply them to saturnian satellites, starting with enceladus and dione. Our primary method of strain analysis uses impact craters as strain markers, but we will corroborate these measurements with techniques which use the geometry of the faults themselves to estimate strain. Our strain measurements can be used to constrain the parameters of geophysical models that describe the evolution of the satellites, and will serve as a first step to understanding the diverse tectonic histories of these bodies.
