Description
This study will characterize geomorphic relationships among valley networks and impact craters/basins within portions of southeastern margaritifer sinus in order to evaluate hypotheses on details of the evolution of valley networks. This will be accomplished through four tasks: 1) 1:500,000 geologic mapping of the newcomb-parana and jones-loire regions, 2) analysis of timing, spacing, and morphology in the newcomb-parana region to constrain possible temporal and formational relationships among valley systems, 3) evaluation of runoff VS. Sapping mechanisms for the formation of loire valles using themis and MOC images to measure system characteristics (i.e., drainage densities), and 4) use of higher resolution datasets to analyze timing relationships among jones crater and samara and loire valles to understand the effect that jones crater had on the history of the local valley network. This project will build on the regional geologic history established through past research by using finer details afforded by themis, MOC, and hirise images to constrain valley formation mechanisms and the effects of impacts on valley evolution.
