Description
Suborbital aeroscience studies - nozzle and fuel grain material study presently, work is in progress to have a real-time digital camera feed to a computer that records the burn in sync with the pressure transducers, the load cell date, and time, so that any anomalies concerning instability, pressure spikes, or hardware failure can be located in the data. These modifications will further enhance the testing process and better enable the students abilities to evaluate the data results. In 2008 REDBIRD11 was the first rocket to fly on a vehicle with a fuel grain designed and fabricated entirely by high school students. This year, the aero science program is scheduled to have the REDBIRD12 fly on a propulsion system which will be completely designed and developed nozzle the high school students have teamed up with the university of texas mechanical engineering department and the texas state university material department. The r & d class will be working with an undergraduate from the university of texas who specialized in nano-fibers to help research a safe, effective, and cost efficient nozzle. The class will also be using texas state s materials research lab to help test the strength of the proposed materials. In return, FHS will be testing ablative materials for university of texas and texas state during our test that will be conducted in the spring. While working on these materials the class will also perform fuel grain tests of roofing TAR, htpb, pban, acrylic, ldpe, polycarbonate, and ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) as well as more durez and graphite nozzle tests. A final report encompassing the test developments, testing, data acquisition and data analysis, and conclusion will be submitted at the end of the research period for the grant NNJ04VC15G.
