About this award

This is a federal grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) with a ceiling value of $561,078.29. The grant is for research to study mechanisms for generating long-lasting pulsations observed by the Van Allen Probes in the dayside magnetosphere, survey magnetic transient events, and study the propagation of interplanetary shocks through the magnetosphere. This grant is part of NASA's "MULTISATELLITE OBSERVATIONS OF THE MAGNETOSPHERE RESPONSE TO THE CHANGES IN THE SOLAR WIND AND INTER" major program. The grant does not have a set-aside designation. UMD is the prime recipient, and the award has an ultimate completion date of October 31, 2019. The University System of Maryland is the parent organization of UMD.

Description

We will test mechanisms for generating long lasting plolidal PC4 pulsations observed by van allen probes in the dayside magnetosphere. We will survey magnetic transient events including impulsive events mies observed at south pole in antacctica to determine their occurrence and recurrence paatterns as a function of local time, their spatial extent, the direction of their propagation, and geomagnetic and solar wind conditions. We will study interplanetary shock propagaation through the magnetosphere including ground-based magnetometer response and compare with the results of MHD simulations.
