About this award
This is a $134,914.15 federal contract award from the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to the University of Texas at Austin's Applied Research Laboratories Division (UT Austin ARL). The objective of the project is to develop data sets and assess the performance of the ATL08 algorithms for the ICESat-2 ATLAS instrument in a variety of ecosystems, as the existing photon counting data has been limited. The contract leverages existing small-footprint, full-waveform and dense discrete return data sets to simulate ICESat-2 data, allowing for a cost-effective assessment of the ATL08 algorithm's performance. This contract is not associated with a set-aside designation. UT Austin ARL is a leading research organization with expertise in areas such as naval systems, autonomous technologies, sensors, and information sciences, and has a history of delivering innovative solutions to government agencies through both contract awards and grant funding.
Description
The objective of this project is to develop data projects and assess the potential performance of the ATL08 algorithms in a variety of ecosystems. A limitation to the science definition team SDT has been the lack of photon counting data available for the development of retrieval algorithms. Although the multiple beam experimental lidar mabel has flown on both the east coast of the united states and alaska, the algorithm performance at this point is based on these types of ecosystems, which are not fully representative of global ecosystems. This project will leverage existing small-footprint, full-waveform and dense discrete return data sets to simulate icesat-2 atlas data. The methodology for creating the simulated data has already been developed and requires only minimal modifications. Furthermore, by leveraging existing data sets, the icesat-2 project can assess performance of the existing ATL08 algorithm for a small investment.
