Description
Stellar dynamics in the centers of galaxies we propose to develop and employ novel numerical algorithms to investigate the dynamical evolution of stellar systems close to the massive black holes found in the centers of galaxies. These algorithms, distinct from traditional n-body or fokker-planck codes, will focus on secular or long-term dynamical phenomena such as resonant relaxation, secular instability, and kozai-lidov oscillations. They include an n-wire code which represents each star as an eccentric wire by averaging over orbital phase, and an n-disk code which represents each star as an annular disk by averaging over periapsis direction. Among other applications, we will investigate whether the complex structure of the young, massive STARS between 0.1 and 0.5 PC from the galactic center---variously interpreted as one warped disk, two disks, dissolving disks, etc.---can be explained as the result of resonant relaxation of a disk with the surrounding old stellar cluster.
