Description
Hope college particle acceleration and high energy radiation from pulsar magnetospheres we propose to investigate global magnetosphere models, acceleration, pair creation and high-energy emission in sources that are powered by magnetized neutron STARS, particularly rotation-powered pulsars and magnetars. We plan to investigate time-dependent acceleration and pair cascade models that are consistent with global models of pulsar magnetospheres. Our recently developed 3D model of pulsar emission over extended regions of the magnetosphere, from the polar cap surface to the light cylinder, will be used in conjunction with both steady-state and time-dependent acceleration models to simulate the non-thermal x-RAY and gamma-RAY emission from rotation-powered pulsars with emphasis on the key observations of glast, agile, lutegral, chandra and XMM-newton. We will also develop our monte carlo simulation of the radio-loud and radio-quiet pulsar populations in the galaxy to make statistical predictions for gamma-RAY pulse profiies and SPECTRA1 trends in different acceleration models that can be tested by glast pulsar observations. In addition, we plan to model the phase-resolved high-energy emission from anomalous x-RAY pulsars and soft gamma-RAY repeaters detected by rxte and integral.
