Description
Spectroscopic parameters of carbon monoxide and methane for ascends several instrument concepts under study for upcoming earth science decadal survey satellite missions, most notably ascends, but also GEO-cape and gacm, plan to use observed radiances in the 2.3-micron spectral region to retrieve atmospheric profiles of carbon monoxide (CO). There is also significant absorption and emission by atmospheric methane (CH4) in this spectral region which must be accurately modeled in the CO retrievals. Self-broadening parameters as well as air-broadening parameters are needed for retrievals from gas-filter radiometer channels. While the spectroscopic databases such as hitran already contain significant amounts of information on CO and CH4, the parameters for these molecules in the 2.5-micron spectral region do not meet the desired accuracy requirements for ascends retrievals, and there is much missing data, especially for weaker transitions. We propose laboratory spectroscopic measurements of both CO and CH4 over the range of terrestrial atmospheric temperatures in the 2.3-micron spectral region. These studies will accurately determine line intensities, self- and air-broadened widths and pressure-induced line shifts, along with their temperature dependences. Most importantly, line mixing (also known as line coupling) and other non-voigt line shapes will be quantitatively assessed. Spectra will be recorded with a high-resolution fourier transform spectrometer and temperature-controlled sample cells. A new multi-pass coolable cell will be constructed to provide the appropriate path length required for the air-broadened measurements. Some previously-recorded laboratory spectra, covering mostly the strongest transitions, will also be included as appropriate. Analysis will be done using a multispectrum fitting technique to retrieve the spectroscopic parameters for several hundred transitions in the CO 2-0 and CH4 octad band systems.
