Description

I propose a study of massive star formation, with the goal of better understanding the morphology of their warm interior transition regions (wits), and thus the process of massive star formation (e.g. core accretion VS. Collisions). While spherically-symmetric comprehensive physical-chemical models have been successful in reproducing a wide range of observations, the results are relevant only for r > 1000 AU. The assumption of spherical symmetry should break down near this point. Wits should contain information on the nature and processes of massive SF. As a result, i propose to construct detailed models of wits based on both observational and theoretical drivers, including: simple screens (to study coverage and gross mass distribution); parametric structures (disks, clumps, and cavities to roughly constrain the morphology); and recent radiation-hydrodynamic structure models (to test against plausible core-accretion scenarios). These will be comprehensive physical-chemical models in which the time-and-space dependent temperature, chemical abundances, and emergent spectrum will be calculated. As a probe, i concentrate on the mid-infrared (MIR) RO-vibrational absorption lines. These lines provide a unique window into the wits of massive star-forming regions. They provide high data density per observation, sample the warm temperatures in wits, and as absorption lines are limited in angular resolution only by the size of the region against which the absorption occurs. Aside from the theoretical goals above, the models are intended to be used for preparation for sofia/exes flight. As such, we will provide simulated simulated exes observations of these regions to aid in choosing target lines, integration times, and instrument settings. These data will also act as predictions, and will be made available to the community for initial data analysis. If time permits, limited data from the exes precursor (texes) will be analyzed as a proof-of-concept operation.
