Description

Jasons primary curricular focus under this grant will be the planning and development of a multi-year, multimedia standards-based curriculum developed around nasas vision for space exploration: "moon, mars and beyond" (working title). This curriculum will provide a framework for students to learn the earth, life and physical sciences attendant to nasas plan for returning humans to the lunar surface in 2018 (including the precursor robotic missions), as well as the broader exploration strategy for mars and other destinations. This grant will enable jason to continue working with NASA in developing and distributing middle school educational offerings consistent with the NASA strategic plan and NASA education strategic coordination framework: a portfolio approach. Specifically, these offerings are designed to support the outcomes identified in the NASA education program by attracting and retaining students in stem disciplines and providing stem-related professional development for teachers. Within this grant period jason is undertaking a range of curricular and programmatic activities in collaboration with its primary science partners: NASA, NOAA and national geographic. These activities include development or enhancement of curricular offerings (disappearing wetlands, mysteries of earth and mars, monster storms, diverse ecosystems and moon, mars and beyond (or a similar title to be determined)); related professional development; continued development of the technology infrastructure to support jasons new digital arachive, search engine, and online measurement and assessment tools; implementation of the national argonaut program; and formation of local science exploration clubs to enable students to work with and learn from researchers engaged in scientific field work.
