About this award

Stratton Park Engineering Co., Inc. (SPEC) was awarded a $1.31M research grant by NASA's Shared Services Center on September 30, 2022, to develop and deploy in situ microphysics measurement instruments in support of the ARCSIX (Arctic Radiance in-situ Colorimetry for Investigating Shortwave Cloud Forcing) project. The work, to be completed by September 29, 2028, focuses on equipping NASA's P-3B research aircraft with state-of-the-art cloud particle measurement probes to collect critical data on low-level Arctic clouds. SPEC will integrate proven instrumentation previously tested during the CAMP2EX project, including a Fast 2D-Gray Probe with 10-micron resolution and an Advanced High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS-4) capable of simultaneous dual-view imaging at 50- and 150-micron pixel resolution. This instrumentation will provide high-resolution measurements of precipitation particle shapes and correlate in situ rain rates with remote polarimetric radar data from high-altitude aircraft.

The contract also includes development of a new Particle Phase Spectrometer (PPS) specifically designed to improve measurements of particle phase in mixed-phase clouds, which are prevalent in Arctic summer conditions. The PPS combines a 2D-Gray Probe with 5-micron pixel resolution and a Cloud Particle Imager with 1-micron pixel resolution to distinguish between small water droplets and ice particles and identify the phase composition of larger particles. SPEC scientists will conduct comprehensive analysis of mixed-phase clouds, with emphasis on separating ice and water budgets and producing bulk microphysical parameters. This work directly supports the IPCC findings that the Arctic is warming at approximately twice the global average rate, making detailed cloud microphysics measurements critical to understanding Arctic climate change and sea ice/Greenland ice sheet melting processes. No set-aside designation was applied to this award.
