About this award
This is a $69,909.00 grant contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Bard College, a private non-profit educational institution, for research related to non-thermal radio and X-ray filaments in the galactic center region. The objective is to conduct deep 100 ks on-axis NuSTAR observations to improve statistics, search for pulsations, and constrain the spectral shape, especially the hard X-ray tail. The contract has an ultimate completion date of December 31, 2022 and was awarded on January 1, 2020. There is no set-aside designation mentioned. Bard College has previously served as a prime contractor for NASA, the Department of Labor, and the National Science Foundation, and has also participated as a subcontractor and grantee on various federal research and education initiatives.
Description
The most unique and striking phenomenon in the galactic center region is the existence of numerous non-thermal radio and x-RAY filaments. The lack of a pulsation detection and unconstrained spectral shape based on the current data does not allow US to test our hypothesis. Therefore, we propose a deep 100 KS on-axis nustar observations of this source, which will significantly improve the statistics, allowing both a pulsation search and a tight constraint on the spectral shape, especially the hard x-RAY tail.
