No set-aside designation was used for this award.
Description
A grant proposal by the cosmosphere international scied center and space museum (the cosmosphere) for stem programming and outreach to build on the lessons learned during the apollo-ERA from the mission control perspective of making informed decisions when under stress and with limited time. This project will bring authentic apollo-ERA mission control consoles out of storage and into classrooms, museums, and challenger learning centers (clcs) around the country and beyond. If the consoles could tell their story, what they did, the lives of those who used them, the importance of the thousand or more people who worked together to get the first men to the moon and back safely, IT would be a fascinating tale for certain! Men and women who were involved in apollo, shuttle, and now international space station missions, can tell the story. We have historic equipment that can travel, tell its stories and allow the visitor or student to insert themselves into a real mission. In the apollo redux project, participants will need to train and understand the mission, their role in IT, and the importance of those working with them. Only then will they be ready to fly a mission and test their knowledge, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Upon completion of their mission, they will have a new appreciation of NASA historical successes and future missions back to the moon, to mars, or even to an asteroid.
