About this award

This contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) as the prime contractor. The $119,424.01 grant is for UMD to conduct research related to Comet Wirtanen, which is considered relevant to NASA's strategic objective of studying the content, origin, and evolution of the solar system. The research will involve observations of the comet across multiple wavelengths and techniques using various NASA telescopic assets. Following the observing campaign, UMD will host a symposium to disseminate the research findings. There is no set-aside designation for this contract. The University System of Maryland is listed as the parent organization for the awardee, UMD.

Description

The centerpiece of our proposal is the symposium to celebrate mike a hearn s contributions to cometary science. Comet wirtanen was selected as the focal point for this symposium because IT is noteworthy in many ways, IT has an excellent apparition in 2018, and IT has connections to mike (see the original proposal). We initiated the wirtanen observing campaign to raise awareness of the comet s approach and to motivate and optimize the science return from its historic apparition. NASA s strategic objective in planetary science is to ascertain the content, origin, and evolution of the solar system, including comets, the building blocks of our solar system. As such, a focused study of wirtanen is relevant to NASA s objectives and we are already aware of plans to use several NASA telescopic assets during this campaign, across all wavelengths and techniques, including arecibo, irtf, keck, spitzer, swift, and HST. Following the conclusion of the campaign, the symposium will provide a means of disseminating the information that has been collected, as well as offering a venue where individual studies can be evaluated in light of the ensemble data to provide a comprehensive picture of the comet.
