Description

Lake city army ammunition plant (LCAAP)- the purpose of this task is to continue maturing and implement previously recognized, ECO-friendly technologies. These technologies include: 1) assessing alternative small caliber ammunition case designs that reduces the weight and amount of resources needed for production; 2) refining small caliber cartridge manufacturing operations to improve "greening" activities; 3) developing an ammonia vapor test as a replacement for mercurous nitrate for evaluating residual tensile stresses in ammunition cases; 4) implementing a primer sealant alternative to the current lacquer on small caliber ammunition cartridges; 5) developing a casemouth waterproofing (CMWP) solution that would be transferrable to all calibers produced at LCAAP in order to extend the shelf life of the ammunition and prevent any chemical by-products from out-gassing into storage containers and the atmosphere; and 6) implementing a non-hazardous alternative tracer technology that would allow all small caliber ammunition to have tracer capability. These technologies are interlaced, and a modification to one of these technologies ultimately has an effect on the others, therefore they all must be addressed using the design to production (D2P) approach. This task will build upon efforts previously completed under the ndcee contract W91ZLK-10-D-0005 tasks 0737, 0757, and 0782. The intent of all these projects is to improve production efficiency, reduce environmental impact, ensure environmental compliance, minimize environmental resources needed for production, and reduce energy consumption and operating costs at LCAAP.
