Description

Life cycle assessment pilot test - the purpose of the base task is to develop and demonstrate a model in accordance with the demonstration test plan to provide the DOD with the capability to analyze and assess the lifecycle implications of its early acquisition decisions across the five main sustainability attributes of energy, chemicals and materials, water use, land, and the mitigation of hazards, and assess the resulting lifecycle costs. The model shall become a tool within the DOD systems acquisition process. The model shall be demonstrated in two ways. The first demonstration shall be completed on an acquisition system, with recommendations and summary provided in the demonstration report. The second demonstration shall be to assess a single material and report the results in the end of life beryllium report. Beryllium is chosen in this case due to its increasing regulatory concern and resulting lifecycle cost implications. The purpose of option 1 is to develop the suite of web based tools that will allow government personnel access to a streamlined LCA methodology. This methodology will allow the government to perform scoring alternatives, and provide a visual comparison of alternatives to utilize while demonstrating the model in accordance with the demonstration test plan on a different type of acquisition system. (i.e., use a combat vehicle if an aircraft was chosen in the first demonstration) and provide the results in the secondary demonstration report.
