About this award
This federal contract award is for research and testing related to ice accretion and aerodynamic effects on large-scale swept wings, which is being conducted under the Advanced Air Transport Technology Project of NASA's Advanced Air Vehicles Program. The $585,477 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract was awarded to The Boeing Company's Engineering, Test & Technology Division. The work is being done in partnership with the FAA and ONERA, and involves a series of icing tests in NASA's Icing Research Tunnel to characterize ice formations on swept wings representative of modern commercial transport aircraft. This research is intended to create a database of ice accretion geometry that can be used for subsequent aerodynamic evaluation and validation of ice accretion prediction codes. The contract is not a set-aside award. It is a delivery order issued under Boeing's Basic and Applied Aerospace Research and Technology (BAART) Indefinite Delivery Vehicle contract with NASA's Glenn Research Center.
Description
Under the auspices of the advanced air transport technology project of the advanced air vehicles program research is being directed at understanding ICE accretion and aerodynamic effects for large scale swept wings. NASA has partnered with FAA and onera to support this effort. A series of icing tests in the icing research tunnel IRT have been conducted to characterize ICE formations on large scale swept wings representative of modern commercial transport airplanes. The result is a large database of ICE accretion geometry that can be used for subsequent aerodynamic evaluation in other experimental facilities and for validation of ICE accretion prediction codes.
