About this award

This is a delivery order issued under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Basic and Applied Aerospace Research and Technology (BAART) Indefinite Delivery Vehicle (IDV) contract. The $370,078.95 delivery order to The Boeing Company's Engineering, Test & Technology Division is for research and analysis to support aircraft certification by analysis. The task order aims to identify detailed requirements and procedures for using computational tools to predict aircraft performance across the full flight envelope, accounting for areas where current tools are deficient. This effort will develop a roadmap to address technology gaps and provide metrics to evaluate progress. The delivery order does not have a small business set-aside designation. Boeing is partnering with Raytheon Technologies Research Center as a subcontractor for this NASA aeronautics research project.

Description

NASA research announcement (NRA) requirements for aircraft certification by analysis. The scope of this task order is to establish detailed requirements and procedures for aircraft certification by analysis. IT will assess the capability of the existing computational tools, identify gaps and recommend best approaches to overcome the deficiencies. All areas of the flight envelope and propulsion system operating conditions, where the current prediction tools fail, will be highlighted and multi-fidelity computational tools capabilities for aerodynamic and multidisciplinary (e.g., aeroelastic, aeroacoustic) analysis needed to fulfill the certification requirements will be identified. The success metrics to assess computational tools capabilities will also be developed. The key objectives of this task order are as follows: identify and deliver a set of target airplane and engine certification requirements, in consultation with airframe and propulsion communities, where predictive numerical methods are desired to be utilized as an analysis-based method of compliance. For these target CBA opportunities, develop a set of appropriate accuracy and confidence requirements for robust and affordable CFD simulation with acceptable quality for regulators and manufacturers. Based on a renewed scrutiny of the capability gaps and shortcomings identified in CFD vision 2030 study, develop a comprehensive CBA roadmap to address technology areas where current CFD predictive capability is deficient for CBA. The roadmap will provide specific milestones along a multi-year timeline, with metrics to evaluate progress.
