Description

The following task descriptions are in support of the systems integration & assessment discipline of the NASA fundamental aeronautics supersonics project. The overall effort is focused on improving the design cycle time and uncertainty in low boom supersonic vehicle design. The need for multi-fidelity design and analysis tools for sonic boom will enable improved cycle time with more accurate predictions of overall sonic boom levels. In order to reduce the overall sonic boom levels and allow practical supersonic flight over land, improved algorithms will be needed for performing efficient design optimization and RE-design. In addition, thorough understanding of the underlying physical principles of atmospheric propagation, better target generation, consideration of off-track effects and other integration challenges need to be addressed. The current sonic boom propagation process uses advanced propagation mechanisms to be able to accurately predict both the under-track and off-track boom signatures. This, coupled with push-the-button off-body computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, represents the state of the art in terms of sonic boom analysis. The needed work is in the design process to achieve feasible aircraft concepts that have low sonic boom levels. As such, work is needed to steer baseline concepts towards optimal designs that reduce the boom loudness while improving or not significantly deteriorating other performance metrics related to supersonic flight.
