About this award

The Aerospace Corporation, a federally funded research and development center headquartered in El Segundo, California, was awarded a $69,015 cost-plus-fixed-fee delivery order contract by NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center on June 6, 2019, with a completion date of September 30, 2019. The contract provides software development support for embedding the Compact Fiber Optics Sensing System (CFOSS)—a fiber-optic strain gauge system designed to meet NASA's safety certification requirements—on VxWorks 7, a real-time operating system (RTOS). The work is performed at Edwards Air Force Base in California and involves porting embedded software from the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system to the VxWorks 7 environment.

The contract leverages The Aerospace Corporation's extensive expertise in real-time operating system software development and flight systems engineering. The CFOSS project requires expert technical guidance to ensure successful software transition and delivery, a critical milestone for the overall program. With no set-aside designation applied, this delivery order is representative of The Aerospace Corporation's ongoing technical advisory and engineering support role across multiple NASA research centers, where the organization consistently provides specialized knowledge in systems integration, software development, and mission assurance.

Description

NASA armstrong flight research center (AFRC) is developing the compact fiber optics sensing system (CFOSS) - a compact, fiber-optics strain gauge system to meet NASA 1S safety certification requirements. The project includes a requirement for the CFOSS embedded software to run on a real-time operating system (RTOS), and vxworks 7 of wind river systems is the chosen RTOS. The project team is currently porting the embedded software that runs on the microsoft windows 7 operating system to a new version that will run on vxworks. The completion of the software transition is critical to the success of the project...for the purpose of ensuring the successful CFOSS software delivery on an RTOS, the CFOSS project seeks expert technical advice from aerospace in RTOS software development, specifically on vxworks 7. Given aerospace's broad experience in support to multiple U. S. Government agencies, aerospace has developed unique expertise in the design and engineering of such flight systems and in the capture and preservation of contractor technical knowledge on behalf of those agencies.
