Description
Table toop exercise for short warning event to be preformed for NASA HQ SMD planetary science division NEO program office. 1. Work with NASA to develop the logistics for the tabletop exercise. This includes establishing the general flow of the exercise, the list of individuals to be invited to participate, the materials to be provided to each participant before, during, and after the exercise, the location and time of the exercise, and the basic asteroid threat scenario to be presented to the exercise participants. 2. Lead and coordinate efforts of the experts from JPL, aerospace, rand, sandia, and llnl to develop and script a complete scenario to be presented to exercise participants. The script will include a kick-off briefing establishing the initial conditions and assumptions for the inputs and providing updates representative of updates the participants would be provided as the threat evolves (tracking data adds new detail, etc.). 3. Modify the NEO mitigation mission design tool to include nuclear explosives. This web-based tool was developed by JPL and aerospace to provide preliminary mission design capabilities and will eventually be posted on the JPL web site for public use. The tool currently includes only the kinetic impact option; a simple method that multiplies the momentum imparted by kinetic impact to account for the momentum imparted by a nuclear explosive will be added for the tabletop exercise. 4. Participate in and lead the exercise. Aerospace institute personnel familiar with tabletop exercises will assist in designing and administering the exercise. (18 hours. Note: hours for aerospace institute personnel not included in this estimate or charged to this project) 5. Coordinate support (both on-site and call-in) during the exercise provided by experts. Since time available to prepare the exercise does not allow for development of detailed support information, experts will utilize existing data on launch vehicle availability, existing tools (e.g., the aerospace/JPL tool for deflecting an asteroid using kinetic impactors), and existing information on kinetic impactors and nuclear explosives, as well as the effects of these techniques on an asteroid, combined with best judgment to respond to questions from participants during the exercise.
