About this award

This firm-fixed-price delivery order was awarded to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center. The contract is part of the Research and Technologies for Aerospace Propulsion Systems (RTAPS) multiple-award IDIQ vehicle. The objective is to conduct trade studies evaluating a Turbine Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) propulsion system utilizing near-term turbine engines and a dual-mode ramjet, and define the viability of a TBCC flight demonstration program. The award has a ceiling value of $892,292 and a period of performance from December 2, 2015 to December 2, 2015. This contract does not have a set-aside designation.

Description

Turbine based combined cycle (TBCC)integration refinement study the overall objective of this task order is to conduct trade study tasks to evaluate TBCC propulsion system utilizing near-term turbine engine solutions and a very low mach capable and scalable dual-mode ramjet (DMRJ), and define viability of the TBCC flight demonstration program that is affordable and traceable to SR-72. There are four parts of this task order, separated by technical interchange meetings (TIM): 1) TBCC propulsion concepts evaluation, 2) TBCC flight demonstration options evaluation, 3) TBCC propulsion conceptual design, and 4) risk reduction TBCC critical demonstration plan development. The contractor shall work with engine suppliers to gather near-term turbine engine data and 3RD generation DMRJ data from the government.the contractor shall take these inputs from the engine companies and integrate them into their TBCC system matching methodology. The contractor shall provide installed TBCC system performance and operability characteristics for each TBCC propulsion configurations. Once the propulsion system assessments are complete, the contractor shall synthesize into the SR-72 vehicle concept. The contractor shall then evaluate flight research vehicle concepts to explore the capability of a flight demonstrator for each TBCC propulsion configuration. At this time, a TIM shall be held and a preferred TBCC propulsion concept and flight demonstration approach shall be determined. Upon the completion of the trade study, the contractor shall develop a conceptual design of the preferred TBCC propulsion system which shall result in TBCC flowpath lines. The contractor shall also define a follow-on risk reduction, critical demonstration, program plan. The execution of the technical tasks will span 9 months with an additional 3 months for final reporting. At the end of all technical tasks, the task order shall produce trade study data, conceptual design data of TBCC propulsion system, and risk reduction program plan. A summary of the results shall be presented at a final review meeting and the task order shall culminate with a final report submittal.
