Description
In order to support the federal aviation administration (FAA) proposed rule changes to engine inclement weather certification regulations and to better understand the engine ICE crystal icing phenomena, the national aeronautics & space administration glenn research center (NASA GRC) desires to establish an ICE crystal cloud capability in the propulsion system laboratory test cell 3 (PSL-3). NASA GRC plans to calibrate, validate and develop proper engine ICE crystal ingestion test protocols and methods by performing development testing in PSL-3 on an engine that has been demonstrated to undergo loss of thrust control (lotc) due to operation in an ICE crystal cloud under known and documented environmental and flight conditions. By this strategy, the successful completion of this planned calibration, validation and test methodology development effort requires the use of an existing and functional turbofan engine with known performance data and flow path geometry information that has undergone ICE crystal icing resulting in lotc. The contractor (honeywell) currently owns the only engine known in the world that meets these unique requirements; an unmodified ALF502R-5 engine, serial number (s/n) LF01. The data developed during the development testing periods will be analyzed using performance and geometry information, supplied by the contractor, to help develop an aerodynamic and thermodynamic model of the development test articles. This will aid in understanding the physics of the engine ICE crystal icing phenomenon and enable the development of proper test procedures and methodologies for all future test articles in PSL-3. In this respect, information from the development engine test periods and all future engine tests conducted in PSL-3 will be used to create a general physics based engine ICE crystal icing model that can be customized by industry to better represent the respective engine models in industry. The data developed will also be used to compare the high altitude tests to sea level tests in an effort to scale the high altitude test procedures and parameters to testing at sea level facilities. This will allow industry manufacturers to certify large engines that cannot fit into PSL-3 at their respective sea level facilities.
