Description

Advances in material properties and manufacturing methods have enabled the use of carbon fiber composites in many new airframe and engine structures. Composites have also been considered to reduce the weight of rotorcraft drive system components. Heat rejection is a critical design issue for drive system components such as transmission housings. The low thermal conductivity of current composite materials is therefore a limitation on their use in drive system applications. Increases in thermal conductivity and maximum temperature capability could enable the use of composite materials in many rotorcraft drive system structures. The investigation to be done will determine the thermal conductivity and maximum operating temperature needed to enable the use of carbon fiber composites in various drive system components. Approaches for achieving the required level of thermal conductivity, particularly in the through-thickness direction, will be identified. Manufacturing feasibility will also be considered.
