PITTING FATIGUE DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED ON SPIRAL BEVEL GEARS IN THE NOSE GEARBOX OF AH64D APACHES. SIXTEEN APACHE NOSE GEARBOXES POPULATE THE ARMY S LIST OF CONFIRMED GEAR DAMAGE CASES THROUGH TEAR DOWN ANALYSIS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS ANALYSIS IS TO DETERMINE IF THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE SPIRAL BEVEL GEARS IN THE NOSE GEARBOX CAN BE CORRELATED TO USAGE IN THE FIELD. THE US ARMY HAS PROVIDED ACCESS TO THE OPERATIONAL PARAMETERS SAVED WITH THE ON-BOARD HEALTH USAGE MONITORING SYSTEM (HUMS) REFERRED TO AS THE MSPU (MODERN SIGNAL PROCESSING UNIT). GEAR USAGE IS AFFECTED BY SPEED, LOAD AND TEMPERATURE. THE SPEED IN REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RPM) OF THE GEARS AND THE TORQUE OF THE TWO ENGINES ARE SAVED BY THE MSPU WHEN THE AIRCRAFT IS OPERATIONAL. HOWEVER, OIL TEMPERATURES AND CHIP INDICATIONS ARE NOT SAVED BY THE MSPU. IN ADDITION, AIRCRAFT WERE OPERATIONAL MANY YEARS PRIOR TO MSPU INSTALLATION. THE OPERATIONAL DATA PRIOR TO MSPU INSTALLATION IS REQUIRED TO ASSESS USAGE OF THESE GEARS TO DETERMINE IF THEIR OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT CONTRIBUTED TO THEIR PREMATURE FAILURE. THE OEMS HAVE MAINTENANCE DATA RECORDERS (MDR) THAT RECORD ALL OPERATIONAL PARAMETERS FROM THE TIME THE AIRCRAFT WAS PUT IN SERVICE. THIS MDR DATA IS CRITICAL TO DETERMINING THE ACTUAL USAGE AND LIFE OF THE NOSE GEARBOX (NGB) SPIRAL BEVEL GEARS. THE MDR AND MSPU RECORDED DATA ON THE 16 HELICOPTERS MUST BE ASSESSED BEFORE GEARBOX REPLACEMENT AND ALSO COMPARED TO HELICOPTERS WITH NO KNOWN DAMAGE. A METRIC MUST BE DEVELOPED CORRELATING THE OPERATIONAL PARAMETERS BACK TO THE GEAR FATIGUE LIFE. THE STATEMENT OF WORK THAT FOLLOWS WILL CONSIST OF A BASELINE EFFORT AND AN OPTIONAL EFFORT. THE BASELINE EFFORT WILL INCLUDE ASSESSMENT OF THE 16 HELICOPTERS WITH DAMAGE AND 10 WITH NO DAMAGE. THE OPTIONAL EFFORT WILL INCLUDE ASSESSMENT OF 10 ADDITIONAL HELICOPTERS.
