Description

Headquarters, air force special operations command,(HQ afsoc/CE) is responsible for maintaining digital mapping and attribute database products for all air force installations and locations of interest to the afsoc air force mission. The objective of HQ afsoc/CE is to provide consistent, standards-based mapping products that serve all authorized installation users and the installation life cycle process. Developmental components include processing imagery and creating GIS products (database mapping), which can be easily adapted to any given situation in the theater. The products should provide life cycle support for a robust variety of data processing activities, analysis, hardware platforms, peripheral products, and software applications. Georeach enables afsoc/CE to perform the following functions: rapidly disseminate data to the field and the command, provide situational awareness, provide common foundation map and data, link facility attributes to facilities, and real-world collaborative command and control architecture. Distributed operations provide a bilateral communications capability requiring less personnel and equipment to move forward, allowing the rear echelon the capability to see the battlefield as IT develops. Combat support situational awareness has progressed very little in the past 20 years. Today in a survival recovery center or contingency operations command and control center situations are depicted by use of grease pencil annotations on acetate sheets a completely manual operation. Voice communications are limited to VHF/UHV radio and telephone. Situations reported via these communication devices are plotted by hand on situation maps. Georeach is designed to provide a computer-based situational awareness tool to the combat support function across all functional aspects. The availability of overhead imagery, sensor systems and advances in computer technology are providing personnel in command and control (C2) positions unprecedented amounts of information upon which to base decisions.
