Description
Asbestos analytical methods have evolved over a number of years, utilizing available understanding of the nature of the asbestos fiber and how best to visually identify them. Currently used analytical methods for asbestos air filter samples include phase contrast microscopy (PCM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). There are also TEM methods that count fibers of dimensions equivalent to those that would be counted under the PCM method called PCM-equivalent, or pcme. Under contract EP-c-05-060, task order #101, the usepa conducted a comparison of various asbestos analytical methods under two different loading conditions; (200 structres per square millimeter (STR/MM2) and 1000 STR/MM2 and three asbestos types; libby amphibole, amosite, chrysotile. This task order will utilize the results of the task order # 101 study to expand the understanding of how different conditions affect asbestos analysis. The purpose of this task order is to compare the results of the asbestos analytical methods listed above across multiple laboratories on air filter samples generated under different loading conditions. This project will be conducted in stages. Each stage will consist of loading and testing 10 batches of 80 filters each. The results of previous analyses will be used to guide the next stage to be conducted. The usepa desires to conduct up to five stages, with each stage scheduled to take a calendar year. As a result, the project is scheduled to last up to five (5) years. This is an applied research/technology evaluation project subject to nrmrl category 3 quality assurance requirements.
