About this award

This federal contract award, DTFR5311D00008|0038, was issued by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), a civilian agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation, to Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), doing business as MXV Rail. The $629,351.53 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract, which does not have a set-aside designation, supports the FRA's CARE, CUSTODY, AND CONTROL OF THE TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER program.

The contract's objectives are to determine the factors affecting rail neutral temperature daily oscillations and decay, and to investigate the relationship between rail neutral temperature/longitudinal rail force and rail/weld breaks at the Transportation Technology Center's High Tonnage Loop and Facility for Accelerated Service Testing. Additionally, the project aims to correlate the magnitude of daily rail neutral temperature fluctuations with track quality. The outcomes may provide data to improve models for predicting rail neutral temperature and track buckling. TTCI, a subsidiary of the non-profit Associates of American Railroads, operates the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, which serves as a research, development, and training hub for the rail industry and government programs.

Description

The first objective of this project is to determine which factors affect rail neutral temperature daily oscillations as well as decay over time, and to approximately quantify the RNT decay under various conditions. This also covers the investigation of how rail neutral temperature/longitudinal rail force is related to rail/weld breaks that occurs in the high tonage loop (HTL), the facility for accelerated service testing (FAST), located at the transportation technology center. The outcome of this research may also provide data for further model development to predict RNT and track buckles. The second objective of this project is to determine whether the magnitude of the daily RNT fluctuations can be correlated with quality of track. One consideration is to monitor curve movement for determining the quality of track.
