Description
The primary goal of this activity is to design an integrated food security strategy that will reduce food insecurity in nicaragua and to more specifically draft related program descriptions for rapid implementation of the strategy. Food insecurity is defined as experiencing problems with food availability, access, utilization and risk/vulnerability. The mission envisions an integrated strategy which may include objectives such as: 1) enhancing availability of food through provision of modern, market-driven agricultural production and food-processing technologies; 2) increasing incomes and thus enhancing access to food through improved commercialization and marketing links; 3) promoting the protection and sustainable use of the natural resource base and environmental services upon which productive activities occur; 4) building resilience of food vulnerable populations to climate change impacts; 5) reducing maternal and child malnutrition and improving utilization of food and, 6) improving the basic productive, problem-solving and employable skills of nicaragua?s most vulnerable and food insecure youth. (these are proposed objectives that may be modified by the outcome of this work). The estimated time frame to implement this new integrated food security strategy is five years (FY2010 ? FY2014)
