J80101DANYAS
Danya will be responsible for leveraging media, entertainment, and technology to scale up evidence-based, cost-effective behavior-change communications. Many past communications initiatives have struggled in Ethiopia because they were not in tune with the local audience. Therefore, in tandem with the assessments at project start up, Danya will conduct a strategic communications assessment with key stakeholders representing both women and men to inform and provide a baseline for the NAFAKA communication strategy development. Some of the key messages will be around topics such as encouraging private sector development, engendering trust and collaboration among value chain players, positive nutrition practices and gender equity.

NAFAKA will achieve these objectives by adopting a value chain approach that will increase productivity and efficiency along the rice and maize value chains, while expanding the reach of the benefits from this growth to include women, youth and other vulnerable groups. NAFAKA interventions will be focused primarily in geographic regions aligned with the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor (SAGCOT): Kilombero and Mvomero districts in Morogorofor rice. Additionally, NAFAKA will also work in Zanzibar for rice, and Kiteto district in Manyara and Kongwa district in Dodoma for maize. ACDI/VOCA will actively promote women-focused activities, such as small-scale fortified flour processing, that increase incomes and reduce poverty and malnutrition. The ACDI/VOCA team will strengthen natural resource management through our agricultural productivity activities by promoting a conservation agriculture approach. J801AIRD01S
The subcontract with AIRD was included in ACDI/VOCA s proposal. AIRD will provide short term technical assistance specifically in providing a quantitative approach to value chain analysis, which focuses on both financial and economic profitability and sustainability at each stage of the chain and identifying and providing recommendations to mitigate key constraints on development of the chain. Conduct an initial quantitative value chain analysis to identify the particular rice and maize chains that are likely to be most profitable and sustainable, where each chain is specified in terms of region and mode of production, type of processing, distribution channel, and end market. Identify those constraints that are inhibiting development of the potentially most profitable chains, especially in the areas of processing, marketing, and trade, and how these constraints can be overcome. Work to alleviate the constraints that are in the policy, legal and regulatory environment at the national, regional and district level.
