About this award

This federal contract was awarded by the Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration to Ensco Inc., doing business as Enscohi, to establish a practical procedure using automated processes to monitor track geometry measurements and identify locations with excessive degradation. The major objectives are to detect, monitor, and report deviations in track geometry metrics that approach safety limits. The $688,144 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract is part of a larger research, development, test, and evaluation vehicle. Ensco, a for-profit technology company, has a history of providing engineering, modeling, and technology solutions to government customers including the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security. No set-aside designation was used for this award.

Description

The overall goal of this multi-phase project is to establish a practical procedure, employing automated processes, to monitor track geometry measurements to identify locations with large deviations that suggest excessive degradation rates. The major objectives of this joint initiative are as follows: * identify and report peak-value deviations in track geometry measures, namely profile, alignment, cross-level, warp, twist and gage, that equal or exceed metro-north railroad's (mnrr) maintenance-level thresholds; * continuously monitor the size and growth rate of these identified deviations; * report appropriate severity levels of the track geometry deviations as they approach FRA safety limits or if they are predicted to exceed a safety limit before the next geometry measurement based on the projected rate of increase; * publication of technical reports providing detailed physical explanations that are non-code specific, such that they are capable of being adopted throughout the rail industry.
