About this award

Humphreys Engineer Center Support Activity awarded a $581,027 definitive contract to the University of Texas at Dallas for high-capacity sustainable sorbents research to treat per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on November 6, 2024, under SERDP Project ER23-4582, a follow-on to Project ER22-3119. The contract carries a cost–no-fee pricing structure and runs through November 5, 2027.

The originating solicitation, posted March 1, 2023, calls for investigation of PFAS sorption onto reduced graphene oxide–nanoscale zero valent iron nanohybrid materials using Rapid Small-Scale Column Tests. The work includes up to thirty RSSCTs in triplicate representing ten experimental conditions across varying PFAS concentrations, mixtures, dissolved organic matter concentrations, and pH, plus additional testing using three aqueous film-forming foam–contaminated site waters. Deliverables comprise interim and final technical reports and annual presentation at an In-Progress Review meeting in Washington, DC. Place of performance is Richardson, TX.

Subcontractors include the University of Central Florida Board of Trustees (nanoparticle support platform development and RSSCТ column testing), Clarkson University (lanthanide-based sorbent work and surface functionalization), and the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska (synthesis, characterization, and application of nanohybrid materials for PFAS adsorption). UTD will provide PFAS-impacted water samples to UC at no cost, subject to availability.
