Description

This request is for approval to proceed with awarding sbir phase i contract to cosworth LLC. This contract is a 2010.2 sbir solicitation phase i sbir contract, solicited under topic A10-134 topic description JP-8 hydraulic power system for legged robot. The acceptance and utilization of mobile robots within the US army continues to increase. The success of the packbot and talon robots in iraq and afghanistan are two examples. The mobility of these tracked robots is limited and tardec has ongoing programs such as the big DOG to vastly improve the mobility of robots. The big DOG, under development by boston dynamics, is a quadruped with each of its legs hydraulically driven. A large amount of power is required to drive the hydraulic pump for this robot, of the order of 15-30KW. A gasoline engine is currently being used to power the hydraulic pump for the robot. DOD directive 4140.25 dictates that JP8 be the single fuel used by the military to power their equipment including the big DOG [1]. This robot could not be operationally fielded because of this directive, in order for IT to be fielded the deficiency in the engine implementation must be overcome.
